Temporary Spray Baste
by June Taylor
I like to put a "shot"
of spray adhesive between the quilt top and the batting
along the border edges of the quilt. This holds the border
edges of the quilt in place and I don't have to stitch down
the raw edges of the sides of the quilt, eliminating the
chance of pleats and puckers in the side borders.
When using templates on
the longarm machine, they have a tendency to slip slightly
creating an uneven stitching line. I found that by applying
a small amount of Quilt Basting Spray on the back (etched
side) of the templates prevents this slippage.

The Circle Template Story
I have
been a professional longarm quilter since 1995 and in the last few years
I have been working extensively with templates of all sorts – especially
circle templates. While working with circle templates I have discovered
a few problems with them. None of the problems were major – a circle is
a circle – but some of the minor problems would cause a lot of
in-efficiency in my quilting which would cause me to take a lot more
time to finish a project. As a professional quilter, the longer it
takes to finish a project, the less money I make.
All of the longarm circle templates on the market are good, but, in my
opinion, there are some problems with them.
•
None of circle templates compensate for the 1/4 inch width of
the quilting machine hopping foot. For example, if you have a
six inch circle template from any manufacturer and you stitch
around it, your finished circle is 6 1/2 inches in diameter.
This may not be a big issue for you, but, if you want a six inch
circle to be stitched just inside a six inch block, a 6 1/2 inch
circle WON’T fit!
•
Some nested circle templates only have a 1 inch “holding” area
and it makes it hard to hold the larger sizes of circles when
stitching. Other circle templates are one large piece of
plastic and can be heavy and cumbersome to use if quilting a
large space.
•
Almost all of the templates on the market are made from neon
lime green acrylic plastic. If you have more than a few
templates in your collection, you will find that you are
spending a considerable amount of time looking through your
templates to find the correct size you need.
•
Most importantly of all there were little or no instructions
that come with the templates.
With
these problems in mind, I “re-designed the wheel” and created NEW
circle templates specifically for longarm quilters.
•
ALL of the Longarm University Circle Templates
made to compensate for the ¼ inch width of the hopping foot. If
you want a six inch circle, when you finish stitching around my
6 inch template, you WILL have a 6 inch circle!
•
The Longarm University Circle Templates are “nested” with
a two inch “holding” area. This gives you plenty of room to
hold the template in position and reduces the weight of larger
sized templates.
•
The Longarm University Circle Templates are made from
different colors of translucent acrylic plastic. They are
easily found in your template collection.
•
Most importantly, Longarm University Circle Templates
include a 28 page, step-by-step, photo illustrated
instruction manual!
The instruction manual contains Tips and Tricks for working with
templates and shows how to create designs that can be made from
circles including- Circles All Over, Off Set Circles - a design
that is sometimes called Wine Glass or Orange Peel, Clamshells,
Stacked Clamshells, Border Designs, Block Designs and 11 pages
of instructions for stitching Baptist Fans!
